Becoming a Catholic

Welcome. This is your first step towards becoming a Catholic and being in full communion with the Catholic Church.

Adults who are interested in joining the Church follow a six-month course, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), which culminates at the Easter Vigil Mass in the Cathedral when they receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion, and are fully embraced as a member of the Catholic Church.

The group of candidates meets regularly, guided and supported by a Cathedral chaplain. All aspects of the Catholic faith are explored and discussed. There are no special requirements for candidates: you may have been baptised in the Catholic faith as an infant; baptised in another Christian church; or new to the faith. All are welcome. Converts have described the process as ‘coming home’; a deeply rewarding experience.
